Why should you apply for ODTUG Leadership Program

Posted in Career, Kscope, ODTUG, Oracle on July 13, 2016 by Rodrigo Radtke de Souza

Hi all! Everybody that reads our blogs knows that we are passionate about ODTUG. We already wrote about how it changed our lives, we have a lot of great friends there, we are frequent speakers at sessions/webinars and Kscope already became the “must to go” event of the year for us. But since last year, it got even more special because I was selected to participate in the ODTUG Leadership Program, which I graduated during Kscope16. It was an AMAZING experience and since the “2017 ODTUG Leadership Class Application” is now open, I highly encourage all of you to also apply! Let me talk a little bit about my experience there.

The leadership program is a nine-month program where the participants have the opportunity to join monthly webinars that talks about a range of leadership topics like leading a user group, being an effective mentor/mentee, work-life balance, to name a few. The participants also join a “project”, that is different for each leadership class. Our project’s class was about the creation of a new ODTUG community, aimed to attract young professionals to the Oracle career. The result of our project was the brand new community called “Career Track”, which I wrote a post about it here.

But this description is just about the “technical” side of the program: you participate over nine months, have webinars to attend, one project to build. But this, in my opinion, is not the most important feature of this program. The most important one is the people that you will meet there. You will have contact with such an extraordinary/talented group of people that you will be extremely amazed and honored to be part of such a great team. The networking experience is one of the most powerful ones that I ever experienced. Over nine months I’ve meet great leaders in the Technology field, the entire ODTUG board, Oracle folks and some great new friend from around the globe (yes, the Leadership program is international!).

IMG_20160627_074520

Another great thing about the program is “exposure”. There are many opportunities within ODTUG to show you work, like webinars, meetups, technical papers and even Kscope sessions. The leadership program will put you in touch with the people that run those opportunities, so you will understand how they work and how you may participate on those as well. The program makes you feel like you “belong” to something greater than your normal jobs, so you get inspired to also to do greater things and exposure your work to other people.

This is just a much resumed description of what I’ve lived during those nine months but I really hope that this may somehow encourage you to also apply for the next class. I totally guarantee that this is worth it and your live will never be the same again!

I’m grateful for all those people that I meet during the program (all of you are amazing!!!) but I must write here a special THANK YOU to Sarah Zumbrum that was our class’ leader that guided us through the entire period. Few times in my life I’ve seen such a dedicated and passionate person about what she was doing. Her actions and words were always of a true leader and I’ll always take her teachings with me in both my personal and professional lives. Thank you again Sarah!

Applications are now being accepted and the deadline to apply is 8/14/16. Apply here: ODTUG 2016-2017 Leadership Program Application

… Kscope 16 has finished and it was amazing!!!

Posted in Kscope 16, ODTUG, Oracle on July 4, 2016 by Rodrigo Radtke de Souza

Hi all, how are you all doing? Man, it was too fast…. This year’s Kscope was great, but when we realized, it was just over already. We got so much involved and busy there that our plans to do a “live blogging” just failed, so we will just go with a resumed version of it today (sorry about that!).

This year for me was the “networking” year. We spoke with great new people, meet with old friends, recorded OTN interview, being in happy hours, parties, after parties, receptions, graduations and so on. It was a great social event for us this year. Luckily, we have the option to see all Kscope 16 recorded sessions afterwards (you too, if you have being at Kscope 16 or if you are an ODTUG full member) because there were some great sessions that I really wanted to attend, but there was no feasible time to do so.

Our two sessions where just amazing! We got a very good number of attendees (thanks all that were there!) and the feedback during the event about them was just great! We are very happy that we could deliver some good information to all of you and this kind of feedback motivates us to keep going and bring more and more content for you all.

If you want to take a look on our sessions’ slides, take a look on the links below:

This Kscope was also very special to me because I was graduating from the ODTUG’s leadership program. It was an amazing experience and later this week I’ll write a post talking about my experiences there and how do you apply for it if you are interested in doing so. It was a nine months program with some great people that I was blessed to meet face to face at Kscope 16.

So, are you wondering where Kscope 17 will be? Check it out!

Texas!!! I already had the opportunity to go to San Antonio and it is really a nice venue. It will be great to see once again the Alamo and walk down the River walk. A great thing about Kscope is that you get inspired by such a great content that you keep thinking about what are you going to present next. We are already taking notes on some ideas for next year, so you may be sure that we will do our best to also be present at Kscope 17.

That’s it folks, thanks again for all of those that were present at our sessions! I’m honored to be part of such a great and well organized event!

Hope to see you all again at Kscope 17!

Here we go! Kscope 16!!!

Hi all! Here we go again! Kscope 16 is just a few days from us and we are really happy to be part of the greatest User group conference in the word! We will (at least we will really try) to cover the entire event here in the blog, so stay tuned for some posts over the next week. On this year’s Kscope, DEVEPM will be arriving from two different locations: Rodrigo is traveling from Brazil and Ricardo from Ireland (Ricardo decided to move to Ireland this year), so it will be great to see each other again.

In a fast-moving business environment, finance leaders are successfully leveraging technology advancements to transform their finance organizations and generate value for the business.
Oracle’s Enterprise Performance Management (EPM) applications are an integrated, modular suite that supports a broad range of strategic and financial performance management tools that help business to unlock their potential.

Dell’s global financial environment contains over 10,000 users around the world and relies on a range of EPM tools such as Hyperion Planning, Essbase, Smart View, DRM, and ODI to meet its needs.

This session shows the complexity of this environment, describing all relationships between those tools, the techniques used to maintain such a large environment in sync, and meeting the most varied needs from the different business and laws around the world to create a complete and powerful business decision engine that takes Dell to the next level.

Incredible ODI Tips to Work with Hyperion Tools

Ricardo Giampaoli , TeraCorp
Co-presenter(s):
 Rodrigo Radtke de Souza, Dell
When: Jun 27, 2016, Session 6, 4:30 pm – 5:30 pm
Topic: EPM Platform – Subtopic: EPM Data Integration

ODI is an incredible and flexible development tool that goes beyond simple data integration. But most of its development power comes from outside-the-box ideas.

  • Did you ever want to dynamically run any number of “OS” commands using a single ODI component?
  • Did you ever want to have only one data store and loop different sources without the need of different ODI contexts?
  • Did you ever want to have only one interface and loop any number of ODI objects with a lot of control?
  • Did you ever need to have a “third command tab” in your procedures or KMs to improve ODI powers?
  • Do you still use an old version of ODI and miss a way to know the values of the variables in a scenario execution?
  • Did you know ODI has four “substitution tags”? And do you know how useful they are?
  • Do you use “dynamic variables” and know how powerful they can be?
  • Do you know how to have control over you ODI priority jobs automatically (stop, start, and restart scenarios)?

If you go to Kscope, please don’t hesitate in contact us there! We will be more than happy to meet you all!
Thanks all! Let’s see which ribbons we will get at this year’s Kscope!

New ODTUG Career Track Community + Kscope New Oracle Professional Tracks and Scholarship

Posted in Career, Kscope 16, ODTUG, Oracle with tags , , on April 25, 2016 by Rodrigo Radtke de Souza

Hi all!

Last week I presented the first of a series of webinars that ODTUG will release talking about Oracle careers (if you want to check out the slides about ETL Developer Career webinar, click here). As I mentioned in the previous post, this webinar was part of a new ODTUG Career Track Community and back then I was not able to give you more info because the community was not released yet. But last week, the new community went live and with two more exciting news for young professionals that wants to speed up their Oracle careers. So let’s see what is this all about:

ODTUG Career Track Community

The Career Track is one of many communities that an ODTUG member can follow. It contains information, resources, and presentations specifically geared toward people just starting their careers. In addition to the materials and access that will make you successful, the Career Track Community will have exclusive networking events with current (and future) leaders within the Oracle Communities.

Click here to go to the Community site and don’t forget to follow the #orclcareer hashtag on Twitter for the latest and greatest information and discussions.

ODTUG’s Kscope16 New Oracle Professional Scholarship

ODTUG will give businesses and individuals the opportunity to send new professionals to Kscope16 by absorbing half the cost of a full-price Kscope16 registration. The scholarship is set at a maximum of 50 recipients. To be considered, you must meet the following requirements:

  • Currently work for a company that uses Oracle products in the following ODTUG Communities: ADF, Application Express, Business Intelligence, Database, and/or EPM.
  • Be a graduate of a college or university in 2013 or later.

Kscope16 New Oracle Professional Tracks

Kscope16 will contain sessions aimed for the new Oracle Professionals where people with basic or no knowledge about the tools will be able enjoy the presentations and leave with a very good amount of knowledge about them. For the complete list of the sessions tagged as “New Oracle Professional Tracks”, click here. DEVEPM is going to present one of them (Take a Peek at Dell’s Smart EPM Global Environment) so be sure to be there, it will be a great presentation!

As we can see, ODTUG is really committed to give opportunities to everyone, from the new Oracle professionals that just graduated from college, to the senior folks that lives and breathes Oracle technology every day in their jobs. The senior people already knows how beneficial this kind of conferences are for their career, but if the young ones are still not sure if it is worth the investment or not, please read what Sarah posted about this unique opportunity and how this kind of conference changed DEVEPM lives in a way that we never imagined.

Thanks all, I hope to see you all at Kscope16!!!

“Where to Start? ETL Developer Career” ODTUG Webinar

Posted in Career, ETL, ODI, ODTUG, Oracle, Webinar with tags , , , , , on March 30, 2016 by Rodrigo Radtke de Souza

Hi everyone!

Today’s post is an invitation for the ODUTG Webinar “Where to start? ETL Developer Career” that will be presented by me on Tuesday, April 19, 2016 12:00 PM – 1:00 PM EDT. This webinar is the first one of a series of career webinars that ODTUG will be providing in its new Career Track Community that will be released very soon. I cannot give you too much details about this new community yet, but I may say that it will be aimed to provide career content for those young professionals that were just graduated or those that wants to give a shift in their career but they are not sure on how to star on them.

Here is the webinar description:

Are you a young professional who just got out of college and unsure which career path to follow? Are you are thinking about changing your career to something completely new and looking for options? Either way, this webinar is the right one for you. It’s the first in a series that the new ODTUG Career Track Community will bring you to show what Oracle careers look like and where/how to start with them.

During this webinar, we will talk about what an ETL developer career looks like, what the expectations are, challenges, rewards, and which steps are needed to be successful. We will discuss a wide range of topics, such as tools used on the job, certification paths, the importance of social media, user groups, and more. This webinar will be presented by Rodrigo Radtke de Souza, who has been working in the Oracle ETL world for quite some time now and has achieved great accomplishments as an ETL developer, such as Oracle ACE nomination, frequent Kscope speaker, ODTUG Leadership Program participant, and a successful career at Dell.

Here is the link to register to the webinar:

DEVEPM will be at KScope 16!!!

Posted in ACE, EPM, Kscope, Kscope 16, ODI, ODI Architecture, ODTUG, Tips and Tricks with tags , , , , , on December 14, 2015 by Rodrigo Radtke de Souza

Hi all, how are you doing? We are very happy to announce that, not one, but TWO presentations were approved for KScope 16! Here they are:

1) Incredible ODI tips to work with Hyperion tools that you ever wanted to know
“ODI is an incredible and flexible development tool that goes beyond simple data integration. But most of its development power comes from outside the box ideas.
Did you ever wanted to dynamically run any number of “OS” commands using a single ODI component?
Did you ever wanted to have only one datastore and loop different sources without the need of different ODI contexts?
Did you ever wanted to have only one interface and loop any number of ODI Objects with a lot of control?
Did you ever need to have a “Third Command Tab” in your procedures or KMs to improve ODI powers?
Did you still use an old version of ODI and miss a way to know the values of the Variables in a scenario execution?
Did you know that ODI has 4 “Substitution Tags”? And do you know how useful they are?
Do you use “Dynamic Variables” and know how powerful they can be?
Do you know how to have control over you ODI priority jobs automatically? (Stop, Start and Restart scenarios)
If you want to know the answer of all this questions please join us in this session to learn the special secrets of ODI that will take your development skills to the next level.”

The idea behind this presentation is to show the main secrets we use daily basis to improve code quality and re-use, as well explain why and what more we could do with each of the tips we will present. It’ll be a extreme helpful presentation with a lot of cools stuff and real life example.

2) Take a peek at a smart EPM global environment
“In a fast-moving business environment, finance leaders are successfully leveraging technology advancements to transform their finance organizations and generate value for the business.
Oracle’s enterprise performance management (EPM) applications are an integrated, modular suite that supports a broad range of strategic and financial performance management tools that helps business to unlock their potential.
A global financial environment contains over 10000 users around the world and rely on a range of EPM tools like Hyperion Planning, Essbase, SmartView, DRM and ODI to meet its needs.
This session shows all the complexity of this environment, describing all the relationship between those tools, the technics used to maintain such a large environment in sync, and meeting the most varied needs from the different business and laws around the world to create a complete and powerful business decision engine that takes a global company to the next level.”

The idea in this presentation is to show the design we uses in one big client and why we use it, the gains and how it works. In fact for the ones that follow our blog and our presentations, this will be the tie point of everything we talk about. It’ll be a excellent presentation for people looking for ideas of integrated environments.

We are very excited about it since we’ll be talking about how to improve EPM tools potential using ODI and also how EPM tools connects with each other in a global financial environment. We’ll be very pleased if you guys show up in our presentation. It’ll be great to meet everyone there and talk about EPM and other cool stuff!

Kscope is the largest EPM conference in the world and it will be held on Chicago, Illinois on June 2016. It will feature more than 300 technical sessions, five symposiums, deep dive sessions, and hands on labs over the course of five days.

Got interested? If you sign up by March 25th you’ll take advantage of the Kscope early bird rates, then don’t waste more time and let’s be part of the greatest EPM event in the world. If you are still unsure about it, read our post about how Kscope/ODTUG changed our lives! Kscope is indeed a life changer event!

Thank you very much everybody and we’ll be waiting for you at Kscope 16!

How Kscope/ODTUG changed my life

Posted in ACE, EPM, Kscope, ODTUG with tags , , on February 26, 2015 by Rodrigo Radtke de Souza

Hi all, today’s post is not a technical one, but rather a “Thank you” post to Kscope/ODTUG for being responsible on changing my life (for the better, of course!!!) in ways that I could not even dream before. I (Rodrigo) am doing the writing here but I’m certain that Ricardo thinks the same as me about it.

It all began when we were selected to present at Kscope13. I still remember how great was to see all those people that we would daily read their blog posts like Cameron, Glenn, Edward Roske and Tim Tow to name a few. They were standing right there and we could actually go and talk to them! The atmosphere around the event is so fantastic that you feel like home, everybody is there willing to talk about the best of the word’s technology. The conference stimulates this kind of networking and it is just priceless.

20130626_155712

Rodrigo at Kscope 13

I must say that our DEVEPM blog mainly exists because of Kscope. Being selected to participate as presenters in the event kind of “pushed” us to this blog’s creation and participating in the event showed us how important is to be active in the community. It may sound very cliché but Kscope made us realize how good is to actually help others when they need and also showed us that every help (no matter how small) can bring benefits to everybody. Sometimes you may think that you don’t have enough knowledge to share with others, but in fact you always have something that can benefit someone.

Then we were selected again for Kscope14 and even before this event started, we have felt its benefits. Kscope stimulates networking, networking produces opportunities and in our case we were invited to be panelists of the second “ODTUG ODI Experts Panel” webinar. I was in the audience of the “first” ODI Expert webinar panel and one year later I was there presenting as an ODI Expert! Again, it was only possible because Kscope gave us the unique chance to network and show our work to the community.

Kscope14 was just fantastic! People say that each Kscope gets better and better and it is completely true. Each conference expands your network, you get to know some very good friends and the fun and knowledge is always present there. Another benefit that I got from there (you may initially find it silly) was the Twitter usage. Surprisingly Kscope taught me how to be more “social” and that Twitter could be an amazing tool to participate in the community and interact with other EPM folks. Everybody uses Twitter and there is a huge knowledge sharing that goes on every day. It may sound a small thing, but the benefits for my personal career are being huge.

Ricardo presenting at Kscope 14

Ricardo presenting at Kscope 14

And as I said, it always gets better. After Kscope14 we got a publication accepted for OTNArchBeat blog and we even did a 2MTT with them! I would never imagine myself doing that before my involvement with Kscope and it was very fun and fantastic! The last but definitely not the least benefit of being part of this community was the nomination that we received for the Oracle ACE program! Becoming an Oracle ACE Associate was something that was a very far (very, very, very far) dream that I had but I didn’t even knew where to start to look for it. Kscope once again was a mind opener, showed us that everything that we do, we do for the benefit of the community and that when we least expect, the rewards starts to come as a recognition for the value that you bring to other people.

This is just some highlights of how my life changed after Kscope entered in my life. If you want a life change opportunity do not hesitate and start participating. You do not need to be a presenter, you just need to be there and enjoy all the great opportunities that it has to offer. I don’t know if you all are aware of it, but we are from Brazil and for us it is very expensive to fly there, book a hotel, expend an entire week but it does worth every cent invested. It is more than a professional investment, it is a life changer.

I would like to thank again ODTUG for organizing this amazing event every year and a very special thanks to Cameron Lackpour. Cameron is one of ODTUG’s directors and has been our “mentor” and a very good friend. He has believed in our work (sometimes much more than ourselves) and he always incentive us to do our best. ODTUG and the EPM community are lucky to have Cameron among them. Thank you my friend!

We hope to see all of you there! Don’t miss this opportunity! See ya!
